And I think that the way of Jesus is the best possible way to live. This isn't irrational or primitive or blind faith. It is merely being honest that we all are living a 'way'. I'm convinced being generous is a better way to live. I'm convinced forgiving people and not carrying around bitterness is a better way to live. I'm convinced having compassion is a better way to live.
I'm convinced pursuing peace in every situation is a better way to live. I'm convinced listening to the wisdom of others is a better way to live. I'm convinced being honest with people is a better way to live. This introduction to the Christian faith is definitely outside the usual evangelical box. He mocks literalists whose faith seems to depend on a six-day creation, and one of his favorite people is a woman who turned up repeatedly at his church, only to tell him that she totally disagreed with his teachings.
He cites his church as a place of forgiveness, mystery, community and transformation. Bell is well-versed in Jewish teachings and draws from rabbinic wisdom and stories freely. His casual, hip tone can grate at times, and his footnotes, instructing readers to drop everything and read the books that have influenced him, grow old.
Still, this is faithful, creative Christianity, and Gen-Xers especially will find Bell a welcome guide to the Christian faith. See All Customer Reviews. Shop Books. Read an excerpt of this book! Christ the Center. Christianity for the Rest of Us: How the. For decades the accepted wisdom has been that America's mainline Protestant churches are in decline, Each time I read your blog, which by the way comes to my email box on a regular basis, I find courage to continue to speak out in my own website. Have you noticed how many Christian conservatives have flocked to the Republican right wing? Have you noticed how many right wing Republicans want to deny freedom of choice to every one else?
This is off topic, but may I ask you how you draw readers and visitors to your website? I am still trying to lauch my site but I am not quite off the ground yet. Thank you.

More than that, I used to be one of those right-wing evangelical fundamentalists. I was just deceived. Even with that, my past is an integral, necessary part of my present, as well as my future. As far as you question about website visitors, mine has mostly been word of mouth.

I underlined his eloquent words like crazy and have referenced them multiple times since finishing the book. He addresses questions I've had ever since I was an adolescent. And he does so in a way that has never seemed patronizing or preachy—he's simply presenting his ideas.
I'm putting my name in this book and passing it around to friends and family. It will definitely be one that I read multiple times. A pretty easy and quick read. This book doesn't shy away from confusing or controversial questions about the Christian faith and historical beliefs in the church.
Instead, Bell encourages us to intentionally probe into the Bible with our questions in order to discover new ways of understanding who God is and becoming comfortable with humility in belief. This book brought stories about Jesus into a completely new context for me.

As someone who grew up learning the stories of the Gospels, it was refreshing to see a new light cast on these stories and how they can inform the way we live today. This book is perfect for anyone who has shied away from the Christian faith due to an inability to 'digest' The Bible at face value. Bell really opens up the discussion to skeptics, questioners, and faithful alike.
He speaks of furthering the conversation, and that the last word on what it means to apply the teachings of Jesus and The Bible to our lives has not been written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been curious about what it means to be Christian. Rob Bell has a magic touch when it comes to taking a simple, silly story and using it as a guidepost for a soul-searching journey.
