However, you should not expect a Western style "how to" steps in it. You realize that you should have a discipline to practice what is written. Still, I am glad I read it and bought a copy to keep it for the rest of my life. This is quite simply a beautiful book. Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who took a pivotal role in the peace talks that ultimately ended the Vietnam War. He points out that in order to create peace, every person must become peaceful. We cannot create peace without being peace.

Ultimately, it is moment to moment awareness that transforms a reactive person into one who lives in peace and understanding. At first it reads just like a Eastern book of mediation and philosophy would, but after reading it several times since then, I have been able to absorb the simple yet powerful message the author is sharing with us. Thich Nhat Hanh writes from experience as a focused practitioner of Eastern meditative practices, inviting us all to benefit daily from his insights because they are readily available to us too, if we open our minds and our eyes to experience them.

This is a simple, easy to read, down-to earth book about how to achieve peace in our individual lives and thus in the world as a whole through learning to be in the now. I usually try to rush through the various books I read, but that was not possible with this book, as the author's wise words calmed me, slowed me down and brought me into the now.

The book is composed of short passages, which makes for enjoyable, relaxed reading. Thich Nhat Hanh advises us about how to obtain mindfulness in various everyday circumstances, for example, while eating, walking, in connection with answering the phone, driving and while mowing grass with a scythe. He advises us that there is no path to peace, peace is the path.

Each of us must achieve peace here and now with our smile, words and actions.

Everything we want is right here in the moment. The key to mindfulness is attention to our breathing. He also includes useful advice about how to cope with our anger through a walking meditation. We should refrain from watching violent TV-programmes, since we become what we focus on.

Much more could be said about this enlightening book, but read it for yourself. I highly recommend it. It really deserves the five stars I have given it. Read it in small portions.

A quick read that has had a profound effect on my life. The last couple of months have been quite stressful and now, after reading this book, I have learned and implemented many coping tools to get back to my normal upbeat and smiling self. Practicing mindful breathing at all times of the day, whether on the phone, in a meeting, walking the dog has been invaluable. Peace is Every Step has opened up my eyes again to how beautiful and precious every moment can be, and allowed me to embrace seizing every opportunity to smile from ear to ear.
